Psalm 14 AND Psalm 53

Today I am looking at Psalm 14 and Psalm 53. Go here to read Psalm 14 in your preferred version, and go here to read Psalm 53 in your preferred version.

Psalm 14
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord.
There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

Psalm 53
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.
Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.
There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them.
Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

I'm sure you can see why I am doing both of these psalms on the same day. They are extremely similar, although there are slight differences.

Psalm 14+53 Verse 1 - The fool has said in his heart there is no God. A foolish person will not have thoughts of God at all when making decisions.

Psalm 10:4 - "The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts."

Some characteristics of the godless:  (all found in the first verse of both these psalms)
  • Foolish
  • Corrupt
  • Abominable
  • None do good
Psalm 14+53 Verse 2 - God is always looking for people of righteousness to be leaders. We should be seeking God actively and trying to understand God's ways.

Psalm 14+53 Verse 3 - So many people do what is described in these verses - "gone aside", "gone back" (turned aside), become "filthy", none do good.

Psalm 14+53 Verse 4 - They do not call upon God. They just feast on others. That is what sustains them.

Psalm 14, Verse 5 - One day fools will fear God. He is the God of the righteous. That will be apparent one day.

Psalm 14 Verse 6 - The Lord is our refuge - a shelter for the poor in spirit.

Psalm 53:5 - One day they will have a spirit of fear. God will not always turn a blind eye to those who oppose Him.

Psalm 14:7; 53:6 - God is our salvation. One day in God's time we will all truly be free. Then we will rejoice and be glad and be full of praise!
