Firework Salt Painting

I saved this craft on Pinterest YEARS ago. I finally set aside some time to do it with the kiddos. It shouldn't have taken us that long to do it - it's such an easy craft!

I got the idea from here.

All you'll need is:
  • Table salt
  • Paper (Construction paper or thicker)
  • Watercolors
  • Brushes
  • White glue
Draw out your design with the glue. Do it thick! You can also draw with a pencil first, and then trace over it with the glue.

Sprinkle salt generously over the glue. Get it all covered! Shake off excess salt.

Get your watercolors wet and lightly paint onto the salt. Don't drag too much. The watercolors should start running if they are wet enough.

Let the project dry completely. That's it! We are by no means professionals, as you can see by the pictures, but we have fun!

Third Week of June AKA Daddy Was Gone

No, you didn't miss a week. I didn't take ANY pictures during the second week of June, I guess. Or else I've already put them in another blog. Who knows. This week in June Stephen was gone to Camp Anchorage with the youth group so I was a single parent for a few days!

But first - we got Rock Band from the Blaise yard sale fundraiser that I helped out at. It didn't come with drumsticks but we quickly remedied that by using some that the Kirbys gave Brianna when she was just a baby! Brianna and Hunter LOVE the drums. It is too funny to watch them play!

For Father's Day we were able to have a cookout with Stephen's family. His grandma has chickens, cows, and ducks so Brianna was thoroughly entertained!!

Here she is showing me around the chicken coop:

Now she is showing me how you feed the ducks:

Inside, Grandma Betty reads to Brianna and Hunter. She knows that even when the kids keep on moving, they are still paying attention to a good story!

Classic picture of Bri - in motion - jumping on a couch.

A few days later at Grandma and Grandpa's, Grandpa caught a snake for the kids! Just their size. He was just a tiny garden snake. Perfect for them to watch in a small bucket.

#14 on my 101 in 1001 list (kind of forgot about that, didn't ya!) - Grown Sunflowers. Done and done! These are the seeds that were given to us by a volunteer at Brianna's school. She thought they were watermelon seeds. This picture doesn't do them justice - they are now over 7 feet tall!

We also had baby birds. I never did learn what type of bird laid these eggs. Brianna and I diligently checked on them every day, taking care not to scare the mama when she was on the nest. Within just a couple of weeks we were rewarded by seeing the new baby birds! Just two days later they were already gone from their nest. I would love to see more before the summer is over!

And our blueberries finally turned! I love having blueberry bushes plus the blueberries from Sandhills Farm 2 Table. That means we ALWAYS have blueberries in the fridge and the freezer and that makes me happy!

And... lima beans! Right next to our sunflowers! Very random. We only got three beans, never harvested them because it didn't seem worth it, and the plants are dead now.

Stephen was gone to camp with the youth from church for one week so I kept his spirits up by sending him pictures from my phone!

#93 - Purge our freezers at least one time

I have to admit that one thing I've gotten really good at over the past year or two is meal planning. (If you're unfamiliar with my "frugal" blog, check it out here. I blog about my weekly meal plan ever Monday.) But there are still times that I wonder what is lurking in the bottom of our chest freezer, and what's gotten pushed to the back of our inside freezer. Now, our inside freezer is at about 75% capacity, and our chest freezer outside is at about 40% capacity (or less perhaps) so all they needed was a little organization!

Yesterday when I had a babysitter available (the hubby), I completely emptied out both freezers and rearranged them in a way that will hopefully make meals even easier! Plus, we have tons of frozen venison (from the last 3 deer Stephen has killed, I believe), tons of random meats (we buy a huge package from a local butcher), and tons of frozen vegetables (clearanced items and leftovers from our food co-op). It's just nice to know what you have. I mean, I knew we had a lot of venison cube steak, for example, but I had no idea we had almost 15 pounds worth. Same with our venison burger and ground beef. I had no clue that we had over 20 pounds of this stuff. I mean, I never went out and purchased meat, but I just didn't really know. You know?

It's so nice to go to the outside freezer now and see all my pretty freezer meals on top and know that there is a plethora of meat to choose from underneath. All neat and tidy. And only the essentials are inside - breakfast items like waffles and burritos, as well as quickie items like breadcrumbs, frozen berries, and cheese. Never again will I pay full price for cheese wondering if I actually have cheddar hidden somewhere in my freezer. Now I know!

#8 - Make homemade cream of chicken soup

I never seem to have "cream of..." soup on hand when I need it, although I consider it to be a pantry staple. So last night when I needed it for a recipe and didn't have it, I figured it was easier just to make it myself then to run out to the store. Turns out it really is that easy.

#95 - Find A Way That Works For Me...

#95 on my 101 in 1001 list - Find a way that works for me to keep up with chores, appointments, etc.

Two kids, one spouse, running the food pantry at church, teaching youth group, doing part-time work mystery shopping for three companies, and finding any other money-making opportunities to make up for my lack of a job outside of the home doesn't leave a lot of free time.

Include household chores, spending quality time with my kids and spouse (together and separately), making sure I spend quality time reading my Bible and praying, taking extra time to make things myself so I don't have to buy them, couponing so that I don't have to pay full-price for stuff, and blogging on three blogs, and free time has just evaporated into a poof!

When Stephen deployed last May, I decided to take the time to figure out how to keep up with all my chores and all my appointments without getting confused and without feeling stressed. I scoured the Internet looking for something that would help me. Most of the time when I found something that worked for someone else, it didn't fit my lifestyle. But eventually, I found something. And then it worked for six months. And then it continued to work. Suffice it to say, I love this schedule. I don't feel stressed about the household unless something else takes up more time than usual. For example, when I do the Angel Tree, I usually am out at the church around 30+ hours a week for three weeks, not to mention making sure my personal shopping is done and everything. But those hours that I'm out at the church instead of at home tend to throw a wrench in my perfect cleaning schedule. Fortunately, I have an understanding husband. :) Sickness is another wrench, vacation is, and having family in town. Sickness is the only "wrench" that I dislike - all other reasons are more important to me than having a clean house!!

So I am sharing this with you. I hope that it helps you. I hope that if it doesn't help you, you can tweak it to make your life easier.

I even figured out how to make it a Google Document... I think. Hopefully this link will take you to my Excel Spreadsheet and maybe you can edit it and print it out for yourself? I'm not sure - I've never used Google Documents. I accept advice. :)

If you enlarge that picture you can see my spreadsheet for October as an example. You'll also see there are many instances where I didn't get my chore done - obviously there are going to be plenty of "it's just been one of those days" days!

Daily chores:
First I have daily chores. Every day my goal is to exercise, have no dishes in the dishwasher that are clean or dirty in the sink, do one load of laundry from washing to drying to folded and put away, sweep the kitchen and dining room, clip and file 25 coupons (so I don't fall behind), and spend time on my devotions. I do make the beds every day but I didn't put it on the spreadsheet because it's just a habit.

I read two great posts on one of my favorite blogs that helped me decide what chores I wanted to do every day. Here is her opinion of three chores to do every morning and here are her three chores to do every night. I don't necessarily agree with these chores but it may help you.

Weekly chores:
Every week, at some point, I have the goals to clean the bathrooms, mop the floors, clean out the refrigerator, dust all rooms, clean the windows, clean my car out completely, change the sheets on all the beds, change the towels in all the bathrooms, clean the microwave thoroughly, and sweep out the garage.

I usually change the sheets on Mondays just because it's the beginning of the week and I like a fresh start. Same thing with changing the towels on Sundays. Other than that, I might dust on a Tuesday this week and on Friday next week. I love not feeling like I have to dust on Wednesday or I have to mop on Friday. The schedule is flexible.

Every other day chores:
Every other day I vacuum and make sure the counters are decluttered and sanitized. Obviously these chores get done more often if necessary, like all the other chores.

When Stephen came home from deployment I realized this schedule worked well while he wasn't here, but when I added in quality time with him, I had less time to spend on household chores. I asked him to take over the chores of vacuuming, sweeping the garage, and doing dishes. Of course he was perfectly willing to do it - we'd pretty much always split chores, but primarily because I just couldn't keep up with it all. Now I was learning how to keep up with enough that he can come home from work and relax and just hang out with us rather than worry about the house.

Let me know if you attempt this and it makes your life easier. That's my hope for you! And if not, maybe it will at least give you some ideas. Some of you probably have kids who can do these chores as well. I know Brianna has helped with unloading the dishwasher, laundry, and cleaning the windows, but there's just not a lot that a 2-year old can reach! Or that I trust her to do just yet!!

Good luck!

#77 - Get Rid of 365 Material Items

I'm so tired of all this stuff we have accumulated (the blame is shared between Stephen and I, although for some reason we have a lot MORE stuff since having two kids!) so when I made my 101 in 1001 goals I wanted to get rid of 365 items.

So far I've donated/sold/trashed 940 items in just over one year.

That doesn't count anything that wasn't already in this house (i.e. if I bought a sweater and then donated it, I didn't count it towards the number).

175 of those items were books. Whoa.

I would keep counting these items but I'm getting really tired of having to pay attention to writing down everything I get rid of. I would say we're doing pretty good with getting rid of things - the real question is, are we taking in less than we are giving away or are we still just accumulating more stuff??? I don't know the answer to that. I do know that on vacation I bought four long-sleeve shirts which I desperately needed, and I came home and got rid of eleven shirts I knew I would never wear again. I guess as long as we don't hang on to the stuff that we don't need, and buy the stuff we do need, it should always balance out.

Go here to read a great post on clutter that I put up on the blog back in May.

#17 - Make Cookie Cutter Ornaments

Finally, I get to cross something else off my 101 in 1001 list!

Yesterday Brianna and I (and kind of Hunter) made cookie cutter ornaments. What an easy craft, and they turned out so cute!

I stopped by a local thrift store this morning and bought some Christmas cookie cutters - a sleigh, an angel, a teddy bear (I guess that's not really Christmas...) and a gingerbread man. They were 25 cents each. I had scrapbooking paper that Leila left here after she designed Brianna's nursery. (Thank you Leila!) And I already had the beads and ribbon I used. CHEAP!

First, you're going to want to trace the ornament onto a piece of patterned paper or you can photocopy pictures onto card stock. I did it on a cutting board because for my first ornament, I cut it out using an X-Acto knife. I highly recommend just using sewing scissors - the knife worked well but I had to go back around and fix the jagged edges.

Trace the ornament onto the paper:

Cut it out:

Dab craft glue (I used tacky glue) along the cookie cutter's edge. Press the paper in place and let dry. Thread a ribbon through a needle; poke between paper and cookie cutter, and wrap ribbon around top of cutter. Slip a bead over ribbon's ends; knot.

As you can see, I tweaked it a little bit. The beads I had wouldn't fit through the ribbon I had (and liked), so instead, I just used two beads and knotted the ribbon at the top.

Voila! Easy Christmas ornaments, and these would make a cute gift too!

#99 - Participate in Operation Beautiful

I have wanted to participate in Operation Beautiful for a long time. The mission of Operation Beautiful is to end negative self-talk. I feel really strongly about this, particularly because I hear so many females that say negative things about themselves and to me, the things they say are just ludicrous. In college I was very strongly involved in our women's group on campus, and we did stuff to reach out to other females all the time. Our society and our world seems to have turned beauty into such a small box, such an unattainable thing, and I can't stand that people or media can make ME feel bad about myself, or make my sisters feel bad about themselves, or make my gorgeous girls in youth group feel bad about themselves. It just makes me sick that sometimes I choose how I feel about myself based on how other people look.

Yesterday at church two friends and I hosted a girls get-together for 6th-12th grade girls. We wanted to talk about stuff that was important to them, but revolve it around self-image, self-respect, etc. So obviously this was the perfect opportunity to do Operation Beautiful!!

"God made you special and he loves you very much!" (from Veggietales)

No putting yourself down!

"Your worth is bigger than your weight"

"You are beautiful... just the way you are!"

"You are beautiful. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise."

"Wishing you were someone else is wasting the person you are"

www.operationbeautiful.com

Me and Cindy loved looking at them so much we decided to leave them up for church tomorrow. And also decided we need to do more positive talk like this around church!

#79 - Keep my car clean for one entire week

I realize the way I wrote this out - "one entire week" may have some of you raising an eyebrow. I assure you, this was really hard for me. Case in point - it is April and I only just now was able to keep my car clean for an entire week. I guess between taking our own recycling, taking our own trash, taking loads to and from church for Fed By Faith, donating items to Fifi's, The Classy Paci, Goodwill, and Coalition, plus all my shopping excursions... my car is ALWAYS LOADED DOWN!!

I tried to sneak in my "clean car week" while we were in Vegas for four days... but Stephen just rolled his eyes when I suggested it, and I guess it would have been cheating. So the day we got back (well, really Saturday the 9th) I committed to keeping my car clean. The hope was that I would keep it clean for one week... then two... then a month... and so forth and so on. I am proud to say that every single day since then I have kept my car free from clutter. I may have bags of donation items ready to go, but there are no Goldfish to be found under the seat. No empty water bottles from three days ago. No gum wrappers. No loose change. One book and one musical instrument are kept in the back seat for Brianna but that's it.

Ahhhh. It feels so good. I hope I can keep it up!

#77 - Get rid of 365 material items

This has been my most fun and motivating goal so far on my 101 in 1001 list. Well, I don't know, maybe the 5K trumps this!! I actually wanted to get rid of 365 things in the first year of my 101 list... I was able to get rid of 375 things in just over four months!!

My goal now is to keep ridding our house of "clutter" and "stuff" and hopefully sell as much as possible. I've been keeping track (although I know I have missed some stuff that I forgot to write down as I gave it away or sold it) but now I can't wait to look at my list at the end of the 1001 days and see how many things I was able to cut down on!!

#73 - Pay off my car

Well, thank you very much, tax refund!! Thanks to you we were able to pay off my car this month!! I can remember getting that car like it was just yesterday. I think we made a 5 year payment plan and paid it off in a little under 5 years. It has been a great, reliable car just like every other Toyota I've ever owned or known about. I have no plans to sell it, although Stephen is like a car salesman's dream because he is already talking about upgrading. But this is my car, my baby, and I'm not letting her go! What a good feeling... now we officially own more vehicles than we are paying for. All we are paying on now is the truck!

And the best part - extra money in the bank every month!

#56 - Run a 5K

Well, you know I started running about a week ago, so I think we all knew I was in pretty top-notch shape.
Yes, sarcasm!
So, on 2/27 I ran for the first time in years and I did okay. But I really didn't feel great after running, so I was kind of disappointed, and thinking, "What have I gotten myself into???"
I ran again on Monday, 2/28, this time with both kids in the double stroller. Huff, puff!! I made it through 2 miles but I ended up walking a lot. I did the first mile in 11:48 and the second in 11:44.
I ran again on Wednesday, 3/2, this time by myself, but I only had time for one mile before we had to leave for church. I ran it in 9:01, so I was a little disappointed I didn't do it faster than that.
On Thursday I knew this was my last chance to make it through 3 miles. I mean, I hadn't run three consecutive miles since six years ago when we lived in Charleston. I knew if I couldn't do it by Thursday, I probably wouldn't be able to do it on Saturday when it counted. But, I successfully made it through 2.9 miles in 26:52. I did have to walk some still at that point, but when I was done I felt great. I felt the adrenaline you are supposed to feel. I wasn't in pain like four days prior. And I was pumped!
So when today arrived, my goal was simple. I wanted to run the 5K in 33 minutes. I had never run this course before, had heard from Jenn that it had some hills, and basically just didn't know what to expect. My only other goal was that I wanted to run the entire race and not walk at all.
I did it! My race time was 30:38 which comes out to an average 9:53 mile, which doesn't sound that great to me but I'm still happy with it. Out of all the men and women running the race I placed 144th out of 398 people. Out of just women I placed 52nd out of 237. I finished 8th place in my age group (not sure out of how many - the website just went down as I was checking it but I think it was 30-something people).
I am just happy I finished it and I didn't walk at all. And afterwards I felt great! Jenn ran it as well and she did amazing! She finished second in her age group and I would have to cut eight minutes off my time to finish it with her!! That is CRAZY!! She was really Sham Rockin' 'n' Rollin'! She was a major encourager, even running the last .1 mile with me because she is awesome like that. It was so much fun.
Next 5K - April 9?? We'll see....
Thank you SO MUCH to my Mom for watching both babies while I ran! I was supposed to run with Hunter but he wasn't awake yet when I left and proceeded to sleep until just minutes before the race started, I found out later!! I would have been fine running with him but Mom was so kind to keep both of the kids so I could run.

#55 - Run a mile in less than 10 minutes

On Saturday, Jenn and I are running the Sham Rock 'N' Roll race, which is a 5K. It'll be my first 5K that I know of, and I'll be able to mark off #56 on my 101 list.

I ran today for the first time since Hunter was born. He's five months old and I didn't run a single time when I was pregnant with him, which was approximately 9 months. When I got pregnant with Hunter, Brianna was 9 months old and I had probably run with her two times. Add in the 9 months I was pregnant with her that I didn't run and it's been a long freakin' time since I ran!!!!

I thought I was going to die.

But I didn't. And I ran the first mile in 9:11. So I've already beat my 10:00 goal for running a mile. Now my goal is to run it in under 9:00 which should be extremely easy to knock eleven seconds off my time. Especially because I was running with Hunter in the jogging stroller.

You know it's bad when you walk in the door, your husband raises his eyebrows and says, "You sure you want to do a 5K this Saturday?"

If I do indeed die on Saturday after running the 5K, I want my tombstone to say, "Exercise kills."

#92 - Purge Closet & #96 - Go through Jeans

I posted a plea to Jennifer on her Facebook page - basically, PLEASE, PLEASE come show me the error of my ways when it comes to clothes! I had probably 15-20 items of clothes that I just wasn't ready to get rid of yet but I just needed a push one way or the other. And I owned probably 13 pairs of jeans and wore three consistently. Oh, and P.S. one of those is getting altered because the zipper broke, so that means down to two pairs of jeans. Yeah.

She was super excited because she is awesome like that and that is why she is my BFF.

Even more exciting - we had two extremely awesome offers of clothes come to us just a few days apart. Stephen K.'s girlfriend offered us her throwaways and then Cindy's friend Megan offered us her throwaways! Hallelujah! A new wardrobe for free!!

So she lugged her bags and boxes of clothes over here today. She sat and watched me try on every pair of jeans I own. Every shirt I was unsure if it was too short. Some dresses I pulled off the hanger and she said "No." before I could even blink. She assured me I could pull off some of the clothes. She was amazed that I don't own more shoes. She helped me piece outfits together.

And almost three hours, one pizza, and four tired children later?

Closet purged.

Jeans purged.

New clothes in piles around the house, waiting to be sorted for laundry or giveaway.

I took pictures of the piles and then decided there is such a thing as too much information.

I now have ONLY jeans that fit me. I have shirts and skirts I'm not ashamed to wear. Clothes that make me feel GOOD! And thanks to two lovely ladies giving their clothes and one lovely lady helping me sort through them, I got a whole new wardrobe for absolutely NO COST!!

I went through Megan's clothes as soon as I got home from church on Sunday. As soon as I went through them I put them in the laundry so I could begin wearing them to church Sunday night. After I got dressed for church in my new clothes, Stephen took one look at me and playfully smacked me on the butt. Brianna grinned, walked over, and followed suit. I laughed so hard as I told Cindy that story, and she said, "Now that's the response we were looking for!"

Thank you so much to generous people. Now what am I going to use my TJ Maxx gift cards for.... oh the possibilities!

#90 - A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life is a photo project where, basically, you try to take a picture during each hour of the day. I thought this would be so much fun because I love taking pictures, and I can never remember what we do all day because it's so "normal" seeming. I decided yesterday to go on and mark this off my 101 list. It was kind of cool finding something each hour to take a picture of... I think I am going to do it again soon!

The 9:00 Hour: We usually wake up around 9:00 each morning. I know, this sounds so late to me, but at this point, still getting up with Hunter every few hours, I don't feel lazy! This is a very typical morning... when Brianna wakes up I get up and either keep quiet so I don't wake up Hunter or I put him down to play, depending on if he's awake or not. I get Brianna whatever she wants for breakfast, and then I get my coffee. While I sip my coffee I stand next to Brianna and usually try to clip a handful of coupons.

The 10:00 Hour: I have a ton of bread in my freezer and it's basically just taking up room because I can't find anyone to take it off my hands but I'm not going to use it all either. So every couple of days I make a batch of breadcrumbs. We use breadcrumbs in a lot of recipes - primarily pork chops and chicken tenders - so these will get used fairly quickly!

The 11:00 Hour - At this point in the day I was putting away the kids' laundry. While I do that I always rifle through their closets and drawers and I try to find things to sell or give away. I found a few more things to throw in my "to sell" box!

The 12:00 Hour - Lunch time! This is what Brianna asked for for lunch.

Lunch: The Aftermath.

The 1:00 Hour - If we don't have any errands to run I like to find something fun to do together during the day. On this day, Brianna and I made Rice Krispies treat houses. She decorated them with gumdrops, candy balls, and frosting. Okay, I did the windows and door for frosting. But she did everything else. Turns out she would only eat the gumdrops. That's okay because I would rather eat the house!

The 2:00 Hour - At this point I was cleaning out the refrigerator. SO. MUCH. FUN.

The 3:00 Hour - Brianna had just laid down for a nap... time for some Hunter and Mommy play time!!

The 4:00 Hour - Making the bed. See how exciting my life is??

The 5:00 Hour - On our way home from Kindermusik! Still shaking our jingle bells!

The 6:00 Hour - On my way to Ladies Group at church.

The 7:00 Hour - I was in Bible study at church... didn't get to snap a picture.

The 8:00 Hour - See "The 7:00 Hour".

The 9:00 Hour - I was driving home from "The 7:00 Hour".

The 10:00 Hour - Hunter looks how I feel!

This was such a fun project. You can see I get to do such fun stuff during the day (things with the kids) and also such yucky but necessary things (laundry, cleaning fridge). This was a very typical day around our house. I guess that's why I love every day I have here!!
