This review is for the book "The Beautiful Pretender" by Melanie Dickerson. This is the second book by Melanie Dickerson I have read. The first one I read was "The Golden Braid" which was her take on the Rapunzel story. I remember being amazed and entranced by that story. I couldn't wait to read this book by her, and again, I was amazed and entranced! I read the entire book in one night, yawning and rubbing my eyes and forcing myself to stay awake to get to the end. I LOVE Dickerson's writing style! Her novels are like none other I have read. I didn't realize at all that both of these novels are actually in series - The Golden Braid in her Hagenheim series, and this one in her Thornbeck series. I am definitely going to grab up every other book in both of these series so I can devour them.
In this book, Avelina is sent to Thornbeck to stand in for her Lady Dorothea in a line of of ladies who might become the Margrave of Thornbeck's wife. Avelina is just a servant, so if she is found out, she could face extreme consequences. She just has to last two weeks in the castle without being found out, and without the margrave choosing her for his wife. She thinks that last part will be easy. Unfortunately, it seems that the margrave is a bit taken with her unconventional opinions, and she is attracted to him as well. Also, there is something suspicious going on in the kingdom...
I'm not kidding - this is a book that will wrap you up and suck you in! In a good way, of course! I highly recommend this book as well as her others.
Thank you to Litfuse Publicity for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
