This review is for the book "Who's the New Kid?" by Heidi Bond with Jenna Glatzer. I will admit that before I read this book I thought it was some crazy health-nut mom using her child for some kind of health experiment. All the subtitle said was that the mother helped her child overcome childhood obesity. I really did not understand all that entailed. After reading the book I would say my judgment of the book was totally wrong.
First of all, let me say that I am so glad this book was written with honesty. I love it when people take responsibility for their actions and wrongdoings, and I feel it is even harder to do that in the competitive world of being a mom. Bond speaks openly about her poor eating habits, which didn't affect her weight at all, but began to affect her daughter at an early age. She also speaks about having debilitating morning sickness with her second child which meant she left her daughter Breanna to find whatever food she could reach at the age of 4, and she also was placed in front of the television as a babysitter when Bond could hardly get out of bed.
By the time Breanna was in fourth grade she weighed 186 pounds and was close to reaching morbid obesity. Bond details all the struggles she had going through doctors, testing, and various weight-loss methods trying to find something that would work for Breanna. In the end, it was a simple walk that turned their lives around and started the fitness journey for this family.
I read this book in one night. It was so good. I loved reading this family's journey and I just felt for Bond. You can tell she had this burden on her as a mother. I highly recommend this book.
Also included in the book is a 40-day meal and exercise plan, tons of recipes, and a Q&A session with Breanna.
