Proof

The game of the day is: Proof! This is a game that Bri got for a present last year and it's a great math game.

Gameplay:
There are 100 cards in the deck, each with a single number on it between 1 and 10, but some numbers appear twice, and some prime numbers don't appear at all.

The dealer shuffles the deck and places nine cards face up in a 3x3 grid in the center of the table.

At the same time, all players (including the dealer) study the cards in the grid and try to create an equation using at least three cards and as many math symbols as needed. Only addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and square roots are allowed, but the cool thing about this game is you can adapt it to whomever you are playing with! You can also use parentheses to make your equation work. Each number card can only be used once.

When a player finds an equation, she shouts the result of the equation, which immediately times out the game and gives her a chance to prove that the math works. If the proof checks out, she takes the cards she used and keeps them.

Here's an example:

I would shout, "20!" Then I would say, "0+5+15=20". This proves the equation is correct, so I take these four cards.

Those cards then get replaced by the dealer:

Then I can yell out, "94!" The proof is that 74+40-30+10=94. I can take all those cards.

Then all of those cards are replaced by the dealer.

If at any point players all get stuck and there are more cards in the deck, the dealer can add 3 more cards to the table. Play continues until all the cards in the deck are used up and no more equations can be found.

How to Win:
Once all the cards are gone or no more equations can be made, the game is over and everyone counts their cards. Each card is one point and the player with the most points wins.

Verdict:
Love this game! It's so tough, it's fun and exciting too! I love that there are various ways to play to make it easier for younger players. You can even leave out higher numbers or put more cards out in the grid.

Great for Learning:
Mental math, speed drills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, solving equations, creating equations, proving equations
