Taboo

Today's game is an oldie but a goodie! I remember this game from my childhood, and now I love to play it with my daughter. It's - Taboo!

The Point:
Get your team to guess a word without using certain words as clues (typically words you'd use to describe it!)

Gameplay:

Taboo is such an easy game, with very few rules. Divide into two teams. Sometimes we just sit on the bed and play against one another when there are two of us, and we keep the cards we get right as our "points".

If you have a team, one person on Team A would pick a card like this:

The other team will sit with the cardholder to make sure no clues are given that break the rules. The cardholder is trying to get the rest of Team A to guess the word in blue at the top of the card. Once a clue is guessed correctly, move on to the next card and continue until time runs out.

These things are forbidden when giving clues:

  • No form of the word can be a clue (you can't say "pay" if the word is "payment" or "drunk" if the word is "drank".
  • No gestures!
  • No sound effects.
  • No clues where it "sounds like" or "rhymes with".
  • No initials or abbreviations
Sometimes this is way harder than it sounds! We laugh a LOT when playing this game!

How to Win:

Technically it would be when the points are tallied after everyone has had a chance to be the clue-giver. We normally just sit and play for about 20-30 minutes and then count how many cards we have for our score. I love that this game is flexible!

Great for Learning:
Quick thinking, descriptive speech, synonyms, antonyms, vocabulary words
