Brunch - the most in-between meal of the day

This morning at work, we had a huge argument discussion about when exactly brunch happens. It was pretty much another Civil War - the South vs. the North. (like that history analogy?) One of our resident northerners was telling us about how her and her husband used to have brunch in SoHo, where they'd have eggs benedict, a bloody mary, and Ben & Jerry's. Renee said, "You had a Bloody Mary for brunch?" And Kathee said, "Well, yeah, it was like 1:00!"

Brunch is at 1:00?

So I told her she was mistaken, that lunch happens at 1:00, not brunch. And she said, if you don't wake up until noon, your first meal is brunch, not lunch. I say that breakfast is around 7-8am, brunch is around 10, lunch begins around 11:30, 12:00. If you don't eat a meal until 1:00 in the afternoon, you are eating lunch. Whether you're eating a pancake or a hamburger, it's lunch!

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way - there were others in the office on my side. I'll have to get the opinion of some other southerners and northerners and see what they think...

I agree with you. Although Longleaf Country Club does serve mimosas with its Sunday brunch. But that's basically just orange juice.

I'll get Kaitlin's opinion -- I ask her Northern vs. Southern questions all the time.

You are certainly correct. Even with Mac's Breakfast Anytime, we all know that if it's after 11:30 it ain't brunch. But, I should mention that when my class does ENG LANG PLA we talk about the history of the word "breakfast." Since it literally means you are breaking your overnight "fasting period," someone who doesn't eat a morning meal is technically still fasting. So I guess lunch might be their Break-Fast, even if they have PBJs or Pizza. Just thought I'd muddy the water. People are just too sophisticated to say things like "early lunch," "late breakfast," and so on.

Another problem is the controversy between what is "lunch" and "dinner". We have actually had people mess up eating plans with us because we made "dinner" plans, and they thought we meant eating at noon.

Hmm...that's a tough one. I'd go with brunch is anywhere from 11-12ish. When you go out to breakfast it's earlier, like 8 or 9. Brunch is late morning, lingering into early afternoon. However, I suppose that all depends on your sleeping schedule. In college Sunday brunch didn't open till 10 am and it lasted till noon or later. (College was in Viginia though).

Just my northern opinion.

I have solved the lunch and dinner problem. I have lunch midday and supper early evening. I try never to eat dinner. Of course if you are serving food, I will let you call the meal anything you want. Just be sure to invite me!
